painting the s3, 2pack? clear coat?

going to do the s3 sometime in the next couple of months.

I want it navy blue (admiralty blue is the official colour iirc) and the daughter wants it grey.

so we are going to paint it grey probably battleship grey or dove grey

I have always steered well clear of 2 pack as I understood you needed a dedicated air line for brething, so two compressors

however, I see lots of u tube videos of guys just using cheapish face masks supposedly able to stop solvents getting through. are these masks safe enough now or are these guys going to be dead early?

and clear coat, overkill for a series?

Buy 3m paint masks & paint it with 2 pack, no need for two compressors & unless you painting everyday
you will not need an air fed mask.
I wouldn't clear coat it as its harder to repair it further down the line, ie once the clear starts to peel lol

And when you've perfected yours you can come over and paint mine

I would just use old fashioned enamel. Particularly if you want gray. Use the tractor enamel they used on the old Fergusons (fergie grey). One of my friends painted his with this and it looks good. He rollered it and got a reasonable finish but you could get a very nice finish if it was sprayed. And being designed for tractors once dry it is very very hard.

Swings and roundabouts. Two pack is hard but chips easily coz it’s also brittle. Don’t worry about respirators. Your daughter will kill you if it looks crap.

I use tractor synthetic enamel,some landrover colours are available.Takes a few days to get realy hard but remains flexible enough that does not peel if you get a ding.Remains shiny for many years with little help.

No problemo matey I painted mine in a make shift tent, I used a small hobby compressor with a
devilbliss HVLP gun but there are many cheaper brands available mines turned out not too bad
its straight from the gun & not been wet flattened or polished

Although you do get a better finish spraying you can get a good finish with a roller with a bit of practice. I did both of mine with rollers and they have turned out quite well.

looks good too, how did you keep those rivets clean on the side? did you put something over them or rub them clean after painting?

I was replacing the cappings at the same time with some galvanised ones from a 109, hence the side panels being removed. The tub got rubbed down, primed and a single coat of enamel before fitting the capping. Then the rivets got primed and the whole tub got a second coat. That was just the best close up picture I had to see the finish.

It is Masai red, which is a standard land rover series colour. I just bought it through paddocks (link) as I needed some other parts as well, it is HMG branded enamel. Both of mine are painted using this and it has stood up well to the abuse I give the 110.

I used hammerite special metals primer, but only because I had forgotten to buy any and it was stocked in homebase. Any etch primer would do the job, but the hammerite one is red which helped with the paint coverage. Red is notorious for not covering very well and needing multiple coats..

Super job with one of those guns. I tried one but was less happy with the finish. Well done.

Nice job, did you apply with a roller and lay off with a brush or just leave the rollered finish?

It was done completely with a roller, one of the foam gloss rollers. If you are close enough you can just about see the roller finish but you have to be very close and looking carefully for it. Neither of them are show vehicles and I deliberately left all the dents etc in them when I painted as I did not want to remove the history of the vehicle.

how many tins you use and did you use Thinners
