I used silver smootherite on mine and it is discoloured after 6 months.

Yeh I cocked mine up as well, the rust started coming through again after a month 
. Even though I cleaned them right down to the metal. Going to give it another stab soon with Fanny's suggestion.

If when cleaned to metal water Allow to rust repeat a few times gets the salt content out spray with an etching primer and paint will remain rust freeYeh I cocked mine up as well, the rust started coming through again after a month
There is no need for very high temp paints on drums or calipers on a normal road car. It's better to get a paint that will take moderate heat but resist all other thinks like brake dust, water, mud and road salt!! Sadly stove paints resist only heat and so have a very short life on a car!! I use spray Smooth Rite as it goes on smooth, dries fast, looks good and lasts for years

Used the stove paint on my new drums nearly 2 years ago and still no rust, probably helped as the new drums were rust free to start with.

Lightly use wire brush and then use black gloss and that lasts and looks good!

thks guys, the reason i asked is ive got a new spray tin of black stove paint,
was thinking of
getting a wire brush attatchment for the drill, taking all the rust off, then putting on red oxide then the stove paint over ther top
but by the sounds of it hammerite seems to be more favourable
was thinking of dropping the brake drums off at the same time , checking the shoes and putting a smear of coppaslip just onto the small drum screws

used normal spray paint (matt black, €2.00/can) on mine, just 2 weeks ago so still looks good under the mud

nothing planed,
had to change brake cylinder so since I had it out I removed the rust and painted it with what I had at home at the time
