Hi All,

As part of my rebuild I'm considering what to do about the bulkhead.... Assuming it's in ok condition, my immediate thought was to get it blasted and then hot dipped.

Obviously with painting on Galv I'd need to use that wash solution (morden?), and possibly an etch primer, but I then got wondering about the longevity of such a paint job. Given that the galv coating is supposed to be a sacrificial layer - corroding on top of the steel to create a barrier to protect the steel - does this mean that the first paint chip you get will result in very rapid oxidation of the zinc coating, and thus, peeling paint?

It's be good to know your experiences

Thanks

Adam

I dont think there will be a problem Provided properly cleaned-primes-painted, the paint will stick and stay there. Remember house numbers painted on to the galv dustbins we all once had - they stayed on

It is perfectly normal to paint on galvanizing, and will work fine providing it is properly prepared.

There are 2 options - either the wash, or leave it out of doors for 6 months.

Prior to powder coating on top of galv, we used to have fences painted with t wash acid etch primer, undercoat, top coat. Never thought of galv as sacrificial, if done properly. It does oxidise (white rust) but electricity pylons do seem to last a while, as do the crash barriers I work with ; easily 25 years, though posts tend to get the worst exposure to salt in paved areas.
