Other Paint D3 windscreen scuttle panel

well I ordered some paint to do my windscreen panel , hopefully it’s half decent as I’m out my league here with paint and quite happily put my hands up in not having a clue , lol

So Think I’ve dropped a clanger as I thought the primer would be the adhesion coat

A good lesson I think for me , lol

Just wish to ensure I do the job properly and not have the paint peeling off in time

So without saying the obvious I assume I’ll now have to order some adhesion paint , doh

This help? It may be a case of the primer will stick better on certain plastics if you use the adhesion promoter.

I’ll order a couple of cans as I’d rather use it to ensure the paint doesn’t start peeling off, plus I’ve got an upgraded front plastic bumper to do so this will at least be a good test project

So is it better to use some wet and dry between coats , adhesion, primer, final coat , sorry for the daft questions, would rather ask and get it right

Also been looking at some cleaning cloths that are supposed to be used prior to painting , as all I’ve done so far is clean it throughly with soapy water

Or would using some white spirit be ok as a pre clean plse

Can't hurt to very lightly wipe over with some fine grade wet'n'dry as rattle cans rarely give a smooth finish (just try running your fingertips over the surface to try it) but I'd be very careful not to go through the layer.
May not hurt to wipe over with a small bit of meths after rubbing over to get any grease off and then avoid touch the surface.

Wet and dry grit wise wise I assume I need the finest possible, ie 7000

Just taken a close up pic, can also feel it’s not smooth so I assume that will help with adhesion at first then get the primer coat smooth before the final coat is applied

No don't use sugar soap or any auld sh!te you have in the shed, youl be wanting panel wipe & tack rags to degrease & remove the contaminates.

Could use gun wash & bog roll like we done the other day

Also don't use the white spirit you mentioned earlier. It doesn't fully evaporate - so will leave a residue thst will prevent paint adhesion.

Hope it’s ok but will post a pic up of each coat , so then at least u vastly more experienced members can have a look plse, know it might be a bit difficult to see the fine detail in pics

At the end of the day I hope it will help others as well

Ps, will be a good learning curve to do this panel first for when I do my other second hand front bumper

This is the bumper I got from another D3 member who upgraded and was going to throw it away so I took it because it has the parking sensor and fog light holes

Seems it makes more sense as I’ve now got an air compressor and buy a small air disc sander , Something like this as I can adjust the speed and thought a small one will be better for the difficult to reach places

The air compressor did come with an air gun but wondering what’s best , spray or rattle can

Spray gun details that came with the compressor

Current front bumper just to show the difference in paint finishes

Don’t know if it would look right having it the same texture right across as the corners

Or as all the wheel arch trims are turning grey might be an ideal time to spray them all mat black to bring them back how they were from the factory , they all just unclip so very easy to remove and spray them all in one hit

Seen a few who have the gloss finish for the arches but I’m not keen on that , like them mat

Update

Hi

So after removing the wiper arms and panel , gave it a thorough cleaning , slight rub down with some wet and dry

Removed the rear heater air inlet panel, so that as I sprayed it didn’t build up as paint went through the holes

then spent some time ensuring I could hang the panel up in the open and be able to move it if it started raining

Refitted the old clips and used some 4x40 screws to make life easier hanging the panel without it touching it

First coat will be hycote adhesion promoter spray

Will put up progress reports as I move further with it

Thought it better having it’s own thread therefore easier to find

Pics are it freshly cleaned and rubbed down

Well that’s the scuttle , heater air inlet and both A pillars done by applying the 2 x coats of adhesion spray

Next will be the grey primer

Now applied 2nd coat of hycote plastic grey primer

Hopefully not everyone is bored senseless, lol

Also found using a aerosol can trigger a lot easier to use , saves ur fingers going numb

Always nice as well getting honest opinions
