On paddocks, a search on part no STC229 gives it as both a 45 and a 65 Amp non aircon and aircon alternator - is this another paddocksism or am i being my usual odenne-missing-something self and missing something?!:D

exactly and could the same one have 2 different amp ratings.Never had air con in a defender, does the pump get in the way of the alternator? dunno where it sits. Guess it's a paddocksism then (a Paddadox?)

hmmm, but they both got the same product number/code - how would they know which one you were ordering?! I think i'm gonna need a new one soon and would of course rather get a 65 one. The same product code applies to the 45 one as well.

It might be worth double checking by going onto craddocks site to see if they are the same.

Wots wrong with yer owld un?
It still works (charges) ok at the mo but when i start up and before i touch the throttle the red dash light stays on - as soon as i touch the throttle, it goes off and stays off but i took this as a sign of imminent failure and was having a look at the likely cost of a new one... not failed yet, might this be summat else that you know of?

Cheers Pikey, will check that - as you said, mine has also always done it but have noticed the light getting brighter lately so was taking that as a sign of more imminent failure! Thinking about it, the light also lights going through water so probably is likely to be a slippy belt...lets hope so!

It could be it's an uprated one for a vehicle without aircon or standard for vehicles with. i.e. suitable for either. (aircon needing more power).

only guessing though.
pretty crap guess really, yer A/C is driven by the injun via a belt normally the extra leccy it needs , if any, int gonna be much. you still have fans like a non A/C vehicle. the main leccy bit of the AC will be the electro-magnetic clutch. dunno what it draws but i doubt its enough to need a bigger alt

Mine does this too (and other landys I have driven) and has done since the new one was fitted, and the old one did it and its had belt changes and all sorts.

If its only started recently then fair enough, if not leave it its fine.

They just don't switch from discharge to charge mode and the increase in rev's switches it over.

Sounds about right for paddocks!

I asked them about the extended bump stops they have, cos one listing says for all disco's, one says for upto end of 200 series. SAME PART NUMBERS (one was in disco section one was in offroad section)

Email i got back made me feel like a right twit! saying they were for all disco
