Paddocks .... and Pro Comp ....

In my opinion ... 'kinace.

At the Bakewell Bash one of my rear shocks snapped. Pro Comp +5". I'd fitted it as per the destructions from PC, but apparently if you fit the washers correctly on a Disco 300 Tdi axle (That has cups fitted already to suit the bushes) the leverage generated with the bushes breaks the mounting shaft. Not really a problem with the shock, I feel, and is easily resolved by swapping the washers over. Did not know this when originally fitted!

So on Monday I ordered a new pair ES9000 Pro Comp shocks .. arrived this aft, finished work at 6, had dinner, went out and fitted 'em and all's good. Way to go Paddocks, delivered a day earlier than they said!!

So, having looked at the new shocks and the old together you can see the old mount is bent. When fitting the new into the bushes it was also noted that the bushes are indeed very tight and that they are not directly in line with the top mounts! So although the mount snapped, the shocks that came off are actually working fine .. so now I reckon I can weld the mount back together and use the two old ones to upgrade the front end to +5" from the +2" shocks on at present .. a bit unsure how that'll work out, but with a couple of other tweaks, like extended turret mounts, added bump stop and probably other fettles it should be Ok, we'll see ..

But well done Paddocks and Pro Comp ... good delivery of a good product that broke only 'cos a numpty didn't check first and fitted it wrongly.

Re- welding,Aren't they full of boom boom gas?

Nah, nitrogen and notalotofit ..

... and it's the bottom mounting pin on the shock that's gone, the welding is nowhere near a possible boom situation. (He says, thinking about preparing an armoured suit, hose and fire extinguisher before doing it)

+5 shocks are meant to have the axle cups removed due to increased flex

So I removed the cups, cold chisel and twatting stick, then file, re-fitted the shocks and job's a good 'un ..

Have to say they move about way better and look like they won't break now, no force on them at rest, whereas when the cups were on they were constantly under some strain. Easy to see and pretty obvious really, once it's pointed out, but wish I'd sat and checked it when I first put them on!

Please note last para in doc above. Do NOT overtighten lower mount nut, otherwise the same thing might happen again .

Yeah, I read that and did it. Tightened up so they bulged to make sure the bushes were fitted snugly, then loosened until they were not bulging. At this point the shock body can be moved by hand so I figure I can't loosen them any more or they'll jump about ..
