P38's - Not all bad

Never owned a P38 but I think a lot of the oft reported problems stem from the same root cause that afflicts all prestige vehicles. When the car is bought new the owner (in most cases anyway) has the wherewithall to have it fully maintained, regardless of cost. Historically each time it changes hands it's older (therefore cheaper) & so the new owner's willingness/ability to continue this level of maintainance is reduced. Throw in slice of under-development/cost cutting at the design/production stage (but not forecourt price!) & the next thing you know the model gains a poor reputation.

Hi i just bought my first p38 with problems;- Air suspension knackered so had it changed for springs:doh:
Heater not working properly:(
Drain on battery, have to start it with jump starter every time.
But i love the car and love the drive despite the expense.:D

I absolutely endorse your view - a lot of these old P38s, particularly the 14 year olds, have changed owners more often than some people change their clothes, with skimping and bodging going on on repairs and maintenance, that's where some of the real nightmare situations arise and some of the unlucky(impulsive?) buyers of these poor old bodged wrecks end up here looking for help and end up just about having to rebuild the badly maintained cars..

Hey Nat, dunno 'bout yours, but my Rangies 4.6 V8 is definitely NOT crap - just gone over 130 000 miles and ticking away very happily, just run in nicely I think!!! :D:D Not a whole lot of other cars on the road would still be purring and roaring away happily at that mileage with no loss of performance!!
