I have for ever since i have owned my P38a had a problem starting it when the tank was at 1/4 full , This year when the tax run out i decided to give it aa 100000 mile refit , new brake pipes , discs all round , Anything that needs sorting is done , to get the brake pipes on the rear you have to take the tank out , so i my wisdom i fitted a new pump into the tank , and a non return valve just in front of rear wheel on the chassis , put it all back together turned the key heard the pump catch up one it stopped turned the engine over , Bingo started straight away , my tank is now on the top of the red and starts first time every time ,

I'm guessing it's a diesel then!
The DSE suffered from in-tank pump failure but would normally gravity/ engine pump feed until about 1/4 tank and it couldn't cope by then!

96,000 is the major service for a P38, change all of the fluids. So whilst you're at it think boxes and diffs.

Same problem in my V8. Trying the same cure too as soon as I get a free weekend. New pump already arrived.

No not same problem, the V8 wont get any fuel if the pump packs up. The fuel injection pump on the diesel can manage to feed itself to a certain degree with a notable loss of power and starting problems if lift pump fails. If the V8 pump fails you won't get any fuel flow at all.
