Oh yes! The joys of landrover ownership. My options seem to be:

Head off clean out bore and back on. cost £250

Second hand engine (does this need to be resynched?) 650

Scrap!

Any thoughts pros and cons?

Depends how much of glow plug has gone into combustion chamber could just get blown out with exhaust or if it gets under a valve could do a bit of damage. Head off for that money is not bad actually if it includes gaskets and i certainly wouldn't do one for that price. Do they know what is entailed?

Having seen the glow plug - about 15mm of the tip. They seem to know more about head gaskets than pump timing. They reckon they can lock the timing off/ exhaust manifold removed /inlet off/ head off and then check the head and bore for any real damage, Even if there is scoring I might still get some use out of it if it runs when put back together. Worth a punt?

Needs a new head gasket, don't let them use the old one. Should have new stretch bolts also. Multiple in sequence angle tightens after initial torque/release and re torque, then run engine up to temp wait until it is cool and a further 90 degrees. Anything less than the proper procedure may give you big problems. Cracked head maybe and new ones are not cheap. Make sure they know what they are doing. If they have done them before should be ok.

I will have a chat with them tomorrow. One thing that does bother me is why the glow plug would eject and why the tip has cracked off and would it happen again?

Glow plug can't eject if it's screwed in, tip can be broken off on removal. Normally if you put a rag over the hole and start the engine the tip will be blown out enabling a new unit to be fitted.

T he middle of the glow plug ejected. the outer part of the glow plug was then screwed out. about 15 mm of the tip was fractured off. Any idea what could cause this? The pump has been set by trial and error, cranked constantly, easy start used, run on forte or just wear and tear?

As for glow plug **** happens, you should not need easy start. Think you need to find a garage that knows what they are doing. Unless you know what you are doing or are a lucky lad you can't set injection pumps by trial and error, the calibration machines use to set them up cost thousands of pounds.
