P38 - Whats it worth

Hi All

A few weeks ago I posted about a problem with my gearbox, well, the autobox specialist has looked at it for my mechanic and its not good news.

Unfortunately I was made redundant 7 weeks ago and still don't have a job and the cost of a new box or repair to my current one is just something I cannot afford now.

Can someone give me an idea what the Range River will be worth with the gearbox needing repair or replacing?

Its a T plate, 62,000 miles. Base 4.0 with cream leather in a nice colour, dark Blue.

Its a pity its come to this but needs must and times are tough.

so the oil and filter has been changed? I'd be inclined to post the fault as the forum has seen many faults before and second opinion costs nothing before you ditch it

Not sure exactly what it is, but he mentioned that both clutches are shot, and the cheapest option may well be a reconditioned box.

I'm running a bill of a few hundred pounds already to get this far, I would imagine a box replacement or repair will be well in excess of a grand? I just cannot afford that at the moment.

so it has burnt oil and no drive? and oil pump has been checked for flow?
I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but it would be better to be 100 % sure. Also where are you located?

It had no drive, not sure about the oil though...

The mechanic is my best mate so I trust what he's says, as in he's not ripping me off.

Sounds like your havin bad times.. thought this might be of help to you. Take a look on ebay Range Rover P38 V8 Auto Gearbox on eBay (end time 22-Dec-09 10:11:58 GMT)

this guy is selling a auto box and its on 99p, you never know you may get lucky, it is christmas and not alot of people are buying parts for there cars.

If you do want to sell, i may be interested. let me know how you get on

Just a bit, one thing after another this year.

It may be worth your while asking if he wants to do a buy it now before the auction ends. Ive picked up loads of things cheap like that

No suggestion of anything amiss, but if the autobox pump has not been checked-cheap check also I'm surprised at failure at that mileage

Second that, the box is about the most reliable thing on a P38

Forgot to say about price, given the low miles on yours I would reckon around 5K repaired, as is about 1.5K, no brainer really is it.

are all the P38 boxes the same or do they differ from year to year?
