Hi all, the water pump bearing has just failed on my 2000 4.6 P38 so need to change it, does the viscous fan need to be removed, or can it be done by removing fan pulley wheel complete to gain access to the water pump bolts. Is there anything else i need to know prior to attacking it. Cheers all

I'd like to see you do it without removing the viscous fan. If you can, you could wallpaper your hallway through your letterbox. :D:D

I used a 36mm - you might need two but I got away with one :)

Yeah petrol and diesel differ in size. One is 36mm tuther 32mm buggered if i can remember which way round it is. Just looked it up 36mm V8 32 mm diesel. Sorry for wrong info. Still got me holiday head on.:):)

Well, good day had by all........water pump changed, 4 hrs. Hardest part is definitely the viscous fan, however with the help of a few poised questions on here job done.(for info- 4.6 V8 36mm spanner, undo anticlockwise). Thanks to all that answered- Wammers thanks a lot.

Good job. If you used a Britpart pump, you'll put your new knowledge to good use as you'll be changing it again soon! My car had a Britpart pump just before I bought it, it lasted 10K miles, the impeller was scraping against the pump body digging itself a nice trough, the swarf killed the seal and the pump started to leak. Couldn't blame the car for having ****part bits fitted to it!

I did not fit a britpart pump, i was conscious about asking that question when i phoned around for prices, ended up with one from Eurocar parts, 54 quid but misses found a promotion code so got 30% off, so bought the antifreeze there as well, all for £54. Metal impeller pump, seems quite good quality.............time will tell!!
