Think you had better get some diag on your car, torque converter lock is active in top gear at over 50 MPH or 80 Kph. Nothing to do with engine or gearbox temp.

I think you will find that the ecu temperature sender on the engine will control gear changes and if you dont believe me try unpluging it and drive the car.

It does make sense, when my temp gauge runs at half way, it will lock up the box. Any where upto half way it wont at all. Speed related of course. 179,532mls box is a bit tired .

I am aware of that, the engine ECU and gearbox ECU talk to each other there are restrictions when cold. But the engine warms pretty quickly providing he has a working thermostat, after a couple of miles max it should be up to temp. If it isn't something is wrong. If he drove for 40 minutes, the engine should have been up to temp at a 32 degrees ambient temp very quickly indeed, and the torque lock did not operate he has a problem. He needs to put it on diag to find that problem.

It gets up to temp with no issues. Everything seemingly as it should. The temp gauge fluctuates on the move! Normal position is half way point. But on the motorway it will drop to a quarter and vary between the two points, speed related and over time. ??

I would suggest you check to see if you have a thermostat fitted or that it is not sticking open (very rare with a wax stat). More likely none present. The temp sender that controls the gauge is not the one that controls the engine ECU. Brown or blue sender above injection pump is for gauge, green sender mid way along head is for ECU. I cannot see that both are duff so if the engine temp is fluctuating it can only be the thermostat.

Thank you, that's my final thought also. As you say about the sensors, I have no doubt of their function but the thermostat does seem to be suspect..

If it is the stat get a decent OEM or genuine LR one with the bleed valve in. Not one of the cheap and cheerful after market things. And check it for function in a pan of hot water before fitting. There is a lot of crap about.

I would not have thought so. For the reasons explained earlier. For the engine ECU and the gauge to be effected both sensors would have to be duff.
Thanks for the input, dead thermostat. Started the bus yesterday from cold and the radiator was passing hot water after 5 minutes.. As if there isn't one in there. Age considered further tests will conclude.

damn, just found this unfinished ony behalf!! It was indeed a dead head sensor!! Replaced the water pump and thermostat also the blue or green sensor.. Cant remember now!! The sensor head had become loose in its housing. All replaced and locking up nicely..
