hi i have a 2.5 diesel 1995 straight 6
i put in £30 of fuel and done 45 miles on it,**** that is bad,has anyone any ideas,it does not smoke, and it does have a hot start kit with a timer on.
which i purchased from eh douglas just outside of banbury, who are a land rover repair centre.
any ideas greatly appreciated the vehicle has done 122,000 miles, the pump has had some new parts fitted,i was going to replace the injectors for ones with a lower pressure crack off,and timing chain.vehicle is not sluggish, there are no leaks, but it does have a drinking problem please help.
oh and i did not thrash it,
bloody glad i didn't lol

Could be the hot start mod is not working correctly so the motor is running on a cold start rich mixture. 24mpg on local runs on mine.

i did think that might be the case, but this works on a timer relay, could this still be at fault?
i will take it off for now tho, just to eliminate it.

yep timing is spot on,i am going to get different injectors, and do the timing chain,as this has not been done since it was new, this may eliminate the problem.....................or not,i suspect not,but won't hurt.

You can tell if the hot start is faulty or not by testing the glow plugs to see if they knock off after 30 secs max, and the engine revs should drop to around 750 rpm after 30 secs (both when eng is at opperating temp)

i am not sure if it will cure it or not,it does make sense tho,if the timing chain does stretch when it is hot, then it would throw the timing out, however,it is not a cheap job to do,so you would like to know before having it done, the vehicle still feels quite lively,so it ain't dead yet.
