2001 4.6 Vogue, about 85k miles.

When cold, car sort of groans under acceleration, especially when revs are low (< 2000). Better when warm or hot, but still there. Also, slight vibration through foot rest.

Out on the dual carriageway, car is virtually silent at a steady 60mph, but if you accelerate or decelerate again it emits a sort of groaning sound. Not very loud, and the wife hasn't even noticed it! But maybe I just have better ears :D

No other symptoms, and it doesn't seem to be getting worse, but any noise that just appears starts getting me worried :)

Any ideas? Or should I just book her in (again)...?

Trouble with having 8 cylinders is that if there is a misfire on 1, it is almost masked by the remaining 7. You might be off on a pot, who knows, probably best to get it looked at.

try it without the wife lol,no seriously, could be the start of big end failure,or look at engine mounts, check oil level.

Thanks for the replies.

It has had a diagnostic check since the "groaning" started, and the only thing reported was running lean on both banks - which was sorted with a new air mass sensor. Would a misfire show up on the diagnostics?

Oil level is fine - not using any, even though there is a slight oil leak on the left bank. No knocking or rumbling noises either.

Are there any points in the transmission that would cause more noise during acceleration and deceleration than when keeping speed constant?

Thanks!

P.S. Passed its MoT this morning with no advisories!! :)
