P38 Range Rover Needs Engine Advice Please

Hi, I have bought a P38 Project,it needs a new engine,the reason been a cracked block or dropped linner, Are my options the following A, Pressure test the block( would this need to be stripped bare?) if this came back OK! then option B, Get new linners fitted (can anyone recommend anybody to do this) or last option C, Find secondhand engine ( Any bargains out there? One other thing that cross my mind is, has anyone fitted the older type engine to the P38 like the 3.9 type (just a thought!) Colin Novice from Hull

Check out RPI's web site or give them a call - they are very helpful bunch. Liners it seems are not the answer, new block seems to be the solution. the 4.0 and 4.6 have poor castings that let them down

Whilst RPI are very good, there are other suppliers of new short motors. I have bought a 3.9, V8 from RPI many years ago and had no problems, plus they were most helpful in explaining the "Slipped Liner/Porous Block" problem when it was mostly unknown because of LR failure to acknowledge the problem existed. A few years later and the owner of a 4.6, P38, guess what??-bellows of steam and a cylinder full of water on a motor with full LRSH. From past experience, the diagnosis was instant and I cried all the way to the bank to get the money for another short engine. Checked all the options including machining my block and top hat liners etc. but shopped around and got a short motor (New) from Autopost in London, all I can say is it is superb and has done over 25000 so far without a hiccup. The quality and price was superb and chances are that the motor was sourced from the same place as RPI at a more competitive price and a warranty. RPI are good-but expensive. The choice is yours.........
