P38 overheated!

Ok so first problem 99 p38 have run for last 12 weeks trouble free and have been really impressed however today came the first problem

Ran about 200 miles to mother in laws as usual trouble free and decided to take it off down the range over a few bumps and try out the low ratios and let that 20month old son have a go. All went swimmingly until I left it out side for 5 mins running came back to bring it in and as I jumped needle in toast position and header tank is steaming

Have turned off and currently cooling down

Now it's the first time it has been run slowly for 30 -45 mins before are these renown to get hot when running slow?

Have re started and took a couple of times to turn over and get going seems to run

What's best to check apart from coolant?

Look forward to some pointers

Did you get mud in the rad when going through the field ?

If so that might be part of the problem

These cars are overcooled compared to many others on the road, so if your hot, you have a problem. Start simple, check water pump for issues, look for crap blocking radiator. Check your top rad hose to see if it feels spongy or hard, hard means possible gasses in your coolant from bad head gasket.

Reduced airflow does seem to be the most likely reason and points towards what to investigate. How much consequent damage will depend on how long you let it cook and how unlucky you are...

Ok it's cool so starting to check top rad hose full of air there was colent in the header tank but guessing it was sitting on air. The colent that was in there was clean.

Now taken 3.5l of water and bleed point on these?

Can't remember checking colent before so can't really comment if it's using water but guessing it is

Pipes are all very soft

Compared to many of the the bigger American V8s that I've worked on Rangies have a bigger coolant capacity, bigger rad and larger fans with more blades. Plus, most cars in the states don't have the oil and tranny fluid cooled by the radiator.

It was hot for prob 5 mins left it for 5 mins and turned back on and had cooled enough for light to go out so thinking that it was not hot for that long but could be 10 mins at max

It's only a grass field so no crap in fan

Going to try and fire it back up again in a mo and see what happens!

Ok the good news is I took a video of my son driving about 2 mins before it got hot and I could see temp gauge was spot on so only got hot for max of 2 - 3 mins if that!

perhaps your fan VC is on the way out. getting intermittent.
