Not too different over here.
The situation is inconsistent depending on exact location, and where you need or want to go.
It isn't too difficult to swerve round the legislation with a bit of ingenuity.
I need to go to London, because my parents live there.
In addition, they live just inside the extended ULEZ, which will roll out next year.
So my Mondeo will have to go, but I can replace it with a Petrol Mondeo or Focus, both of which were Euro 4 compliant from 2001, so available at a very low cost.
NBs 1964 Series is a historic vehicle, so exempt from ULEZ, and pretty much everything else.

We need to go to the outer suburbs of Paris because that is where my wife's handicapped son lives, but we cannot go in the P38, a hire car is the only real option. The train is not an option either as there is too much stuff to take.

Unless the hire cars are inexpensive, might be worth buying a little petrol car cheap, just for the journeys into Paris.

I can believe that. My memories of driving in France are distant, but unpleasant, and I am not hoping to repeat the experience.

So have the French authorities not gone for the Euro 4 petrol, Euro 6 diesel specs for Paris, then?

I'll have to check for petrol, but I think they will also be Euro 6.
Apart from around Paris, driving in France is great, empty roads and very few potholes, I used to tour over here on my motorbike every year. Happy days

ULEZ is Euro 4 petrol, Euro 6 diesel. I had assumed it was an EU wide approach, but maybe it isn't.
Euro 4 petrol isn't really a problem, all makes went to it in 2007, but some makers, Ford and Mercedes included, decided to jump the gun and introduced it in 2001, so there are lots of compliant cheapies now available.

I am sure you are right, but the only times I have driven in France was in and around Paris.

There is no EU ruling on introducing anti pollution measures as such, each to their own so to speak. Macron is dead set on m making everyone go electric by offering tax payer funded bribes to trade an old car for an EV. Even if I could find the £15K needed after the bribe for an EV, it would not be of much use, they will not pull a 3.5 tonne trailer or even my caravan for any distance. Going to the UK would become a 2 day trip to allow for recharging etc. It will all end in tears as far as EV's are concerned I fear.

Paris is the only one this applies to unless you are driving a truck or light commercial and then you can only add Grenoble and Strasbourg, and this if you are driving a light commercial or a heavy one.
But there is a long list of towns that CAN apply restrictions under certain circumstances.
Or has the law changed since July last year?

Still have no idea where all the electric for all these milk floats will come from

Bit of an urban rural divide, I suspect. In London, there seem to be quite a few in use without issues.
In the more remote areas, much less uptake, and fewer charging points.

I think the French authorities are rash to push ahead so fast. It needs to be introduced slowly, allow time for infrastructure changeover, and to allow the resources to make the batteries to be mined. There is only so much cobalt production available at any one time.

Leclerc used to do hire cars on a very cheap daily rate, but they clobber you on the mileage I think. Maybe drive to a Leclerc just outside the zone and hire one there?

You are talking about UK drivers, I live in France so I am not a UK driver. You can add Bordeaux, and a couple of other southern cities to the list where I cannot go. The only 2 that matter to me are Paris & Bordeaux.

I can remember taking a 6 wheeler Transit into Paris on a French exchange, full of girls, you should have heard them scream as I drove onto the Place Général de Gaulle. (Arc de Triomphe roundabout!) Flipped both door mirrors back in two days! Like London only they take fewer prisoners!
and they can drive like twunts anywhere!
They see you ahead with Brit plates, get up your asre, don't overtake where they can cos they is so terrible at it, then finally do it in a stupid place, then slow down to the speed you were doing anyway! I suppose each overtaking of a "bifteck" extends their penises by 2 mm!
