P38 oil light no show!

Ok so just recently my P38 diesel hasnt been showing the oil light (red oil can) on start up at all... Ive checked the bulb and it seems fine.. Little nervous about driving it without it just in case. Would anyone have any ideas where to start looking with this issue?

Is supposed to come with ignition as a bulb check. Signal to turn it on and off comes from BECM. Signal from pressure switch goes to BECM.

So could it be wiring from sensor to BECM? also if i plugged another sensor in without fitting it would it put the light on or does it need to be fitted?

Diesel and petrol both work the same, should come on with ignition in position two as bulb check and go out when oil pressure is sensed. With sensor disconnected, circuit is incomplete, that would maybe cause what you say. :);)
 
Sorry if this is slightly off topic, but does anyone else remember actual Bourdon type pressure gauges? Intrinsically diagnostic, they were - and close to totally reliable.

Meanwhile we "advance" with pressure switches galore...

(assuming the sensor is a normal generic pressure switch thingy - just a switch to ground)

Get yourself either a multimeter or a bulb with some wires & croc clips attached. Connect one end to battery +ve and other end to single connector on pressure switch.

Sensor should change state on/off or off/on when engine started thus lighting/extinguishing bulb.
 
Ok that's great I'll try it out.. Ive bought a new sensor anyway so will fit that just to be sure. I cant remember now if you need to drain the oil before fitting it or if you can do it when its full?

My Cortina mk1 has pressure switch and manual gauge, no electronic happy days
getting insurance quotes when i say it modified they say is it chipped has it got factory fitted alarm imodalizer tracker:doh:

I miss my series 2.

One croc clip to battery for ignition & indicators.
One croc clip to battery for lights.
Windscreen down when it rained because wipers not fitted.
Speedo & oil pressure gauge nicked from a mini.
Fuel gauge = stick.
