Help needed please with my P38 2.5

when I changed from High Ratio to low ratio “neutral” with the auto gearbox, the neutral sign came up on the dashboard and the buzzer sounds. I sat there for 5mins and nothing changed, so I put it into forward gear and had power (i.e. movement) but the select neutral sign came up and the buzzer was still sounding,
there was no gearbox fault sine,

So I put it back into high and everything was back to normal.

I tried again into low neutral and sat for 10mins still the same so I moved through all the low gears and into park and back still the same (select neutral sign came up) soon as I retuned to high everything was back to normal.

I have had a look back thru old posts and this is all I can find that’s related to this.
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/p38-diesel-auto-transmission-problems-169791.html

Is this the same type of fault or is something else wrong.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Also is there anywhere that I can stick an old post that I want to refer back to on the forum, i.e. a favourites bit

Cheers Grant :)
Ps please understand this is my first Range Rover so I am a complete numty :blabla:

Hi
I also had a problem with selecting low ratio a year ago.
By selecting low the lights were flashing and the buzzer sound came up but the transfer wasn’t changing ratio. The message “select neutral” was displayed. I was still able to drive in hi gears normally however I lost the cruise control and the sport mode. The green lights on the selector lever were flashing all the time and not solid as normally.

You can still use the cruise control? Is the sport mode working?

My problem was a shot hi-low ratio control motor.
Normally the problem is caused by the ratio control motor or the transfer ECU. The question is which one you attack first. I chose the transfer ECU… bad choice! It was the motor.

I would take out the transfer ECU (under LH seat, on the back) and look if it is smell burned. If so it is probably the ECU, if not… who knows. Motor? ECU? Something else?

Its fine in high ratio, the cruise control and sport is working,

I took it to my local mechanic and he took the connections off the hi-low ratio control motor and said they where spotlessly clean but he would not touch the ECU under the LH seat as he says it might upset it or stop it working.

Can I take the connections of the ECU to see if they are ok
(engine off and keys out) and put it back without upsetting the system?

Or is there anyone that can have a look at it for me please in exchange for hugs, coffee, bacon butties
Cheers

Hi, I put a post on hear yesterday about high and low gears, one of the replies said to put into high range neutral wait for the light to come on the dash then drop it into low range, hope this helps.

Yes I saw that thanks,

The high range is working fine and the lights on the dash (green) show the gears instantly, from P thru to 1st and the lights on the driver’s side of the gear stick are green.

Put it in to neutral (P sine on dash in green) wait a few secs then when I put it in to low range neutral the light on the dash N is green but the buzzer sounds and the Transfer gearbox (amber) sine flashes the lights on the passenger side of the gear stick flash amber,
you can sit there for 5 mins and nothing changes, no clunks or clicks,
soon as you put it in to drive or any of the low gears or park the sine on the dash says select neutral.

Cheers Grant

If I recall correctly the usual way of troubleshooting this is to feed 12V directly to the motor to see if it will shift from High into Low. There's also some known problems with some sensors packing up and not allowing the change. Try using search and I'm sure you'll find some threads on this.

You can add a thread to your subscribed threads, if you have started a thread or replied to one it's done automatically, else at the top right of the thread in the lower thinner green banner select the "Thread tools" drop down and click "Subscribe to this thread". To see or manage your subscribed threads, just under the main LandyZone header banner, on the right is the drop down "Quick links" click this then select "Subscribed Threads"

Micro switch on the gear lever not operating to initiate the change:)

That's great thanks next prob how do I find the micro switch and is it easy to replace thanks

Download RAVE for details, there is a link in Wammers compressor test in the How To section at the top of the page.
Also worth checking the connectors on the transfer box shift motor while you are at it.
