Hi i have a 4.6 hse range rover which has just started to make a bad noise when i put my foot down hard to pull away (using the kick down). she makes about four or five loud banging sounds as she pulls away. i thought this was a uj on the prop but no.. had a friend look at her and he seems to think there is a problem with the transfer box...has anybody else had this problem or can suggest anything to help
kind regards jake.

if it the drive chain in the transfer box, is this something that can be replaced with a new one or would it be cheaper just to replace the whole box.
thanks

i suppose you can buy the chain but not the sprockets ( makes me mad ).
output shaft ? had'nt thought of that. is that the splines on the shaft that are worn do you mean..not getting any clatter off the chain under normal driving...or any other noise under normal driving just when i use the kickdown

I've heard a worn transfer box chain described as sounding like a machine gun under heavy acceleration.

I believe that it can be changed without having to change the associated sprockets. It just stretches eventually and it's a big wide buggr, so unless you do a lot of your kickdown accelerations and let it slip, the sprockets ought to be ok.

I'd be tempted to get a reconned transfer box from ashcrofts. They're not that expensive and you get a new VCU with it too.
