I have seen lots of fobs on ebay. Selling for around £40. The independant who services my rangerover says that they are no good. Can anyone tell me if the fobs really can or can not be reprogramed to suit your vehicle? One guy is even offering to do the programing at an extra cost in london. Is the only option £100+ from landrover. I have only one key!

im in the same boat as you. i only have Key 1, and the price quoted from local landy was just over £100. I have seen fobs on ebay, and apparently the fob and the programming is the easy bit (i have a document at home that i 'aquired' that describes how to do it, so will post here later) :). The tricky bit is the key itself as it is laser cut, so your local mister minut just wont cut it (lmao no pun intended).

ok here is the instructions as per the LR Handset Synchronisation:

Note 1: If the vehicle is already locked, press the unlock button on the handset and then lock using the key.
Note 2: If the vehicle is already unlocked, press the lock button on the handset and then lock the vehicle using the key.
Note 3: Make sure indicators flash at each step.
Note 4: Three incorrect attempts will result in a 30min lockout.

1) Insert Key into driver's door & turn key 4 times to the locked position
2) Turn key to the unlock position W times
3) Turn key to the lock position X times
4) Turn key to the unlock position Y times
5) Turn key to the lock position Z times
6) Turn key to the unlock position 1 time & synchronise handset done

W,X,Y,Z is the Emergency Key Access code given to you by LR

Hope this helps someone.

hello boys its me again and i take no offence as some fitters that work for garages just fit parts i have trained for a few years now and think im pretty good at what i do so no offence taken.this is what i know about p38 keys, i do know that all the information is held on a huge ford data base now, this hold your chassis no reg no engine no gearbox no and so on,also they know how many keys have been issued to that vehicle and what no they are stated on back, the becm holds all the information regarding key nos eka codes and basically everything you need to know, the engine ecm also receives a code when the key is inserted into ignition,i would only buy a key from landrover as i trust them and they have the knowledge you can only get a full lock set with matching keys from landrover i believe,to synchronise the remotes you only have to turn key to the unlock position and press unlock on handset then turn to lock and press lock on handset this is only to synchronise the remote after replacing batteries or such like you can use the EKA system but that only mobilises the car that time and you will have to do it every time to get car started,im sure some body can get the keys to work with computors, but as far as iknow you cant extract the security coding from the BECM other wise people would just be able to steel your car if they got the info,so be carefull they keys have a fixed code and a rolling code and thats why i would recomend paying the extra and have no hassle hope this helps.

ah ok. thx for the extra info. looks like both doug and i will be making the trip to a main dealer, cos you have to be there in person to order it, you cant do it over the phone.

i know its sounds complicated but it does stop nasty srotes steeling your pride and joy, cant vouch for independantes but atleast you get a garentee with landrover.there was a story from way back that 5 customers got new car p38s and the sales person ordered an extra key for each vehicle he then emigrated to australia, but befoe he went sold the keys and name and addresses of clients for a tidy sum to tea leaves not sure if he ever got caught beware of people who can find out all about your car,yes your right its the X FILES TRUST NO ONE !

The P38 key has an individual "Lockset Barcode" consisting of around approx. 12 digits, this code is programmed into the BECM and is specific to the vehicle. The other "Spare" keys also have their own individual code which is different to the others as the keys are identified as Key 01,02 etc. A good locksmith can cut the keys-if you can get the blanks but the correct key when inserted into the lgnition barrel is prompted by an electro magnetic coil around the ignition switch to send it's individual code to the BECM,if all is correct the Engine control module will allow the car to start.
The lockset code is only available to LR dealers and proof of ownership and the VIN are required.I would NEVER buy a key from Ebay-it just wont work.I know from experience!!If you buy a new key, keep a note of the Lockset Barcode that comes with it and make sure that you buy an 02 if you have an 01,do not buy another 01.

Thanks to all who have replied... off to LandRover it is!!!

Great Web site... now a regular visitor!

Hi Doug,

Just trying to help you save money. It's like a Dyson cleaner out there with all these main dealers trying to take our cash.Pity they don't realise that we are "Ordinary" motorists and not able to have access to the bottomless pit of money that they dream about.
It's brilliant that a website such as this is has so many helpful members-long may it last.
At times, there is no alternative other than use the main dealers, but not unless absolutely necessary and as a last resort!!

cheers pat, but as i only have one key, id be mad to post it somewhere in the hope it actualy gets there, they dont rip me off, and it gets back to me through the post. im not that lucky! :p

the one on that webby is £75 and its £100ish from LR. looks like ill just bite the bullet and goto the shiney LR maindealer...i know i know...i was going to do it two weeks ago, just aint had the time yet... :D

Well that's answered a question I was going to ask. Wonder how much the fob's going to cost over here???????? Just going to have to grin and bare it with the local Portuguese LR dealer:(

hi guys
i currantly have a p38 1995
i only have 1 key but need 3!
not wanting to stump up the £280 the stealer wants for 2 keys i was thinking of geting a couple of keys from ebay and hideing my existing key in the dash somewere for the immobliser ( minus the blade just in case its found) rendering the factory alarm redundant.
then rely on the clifford thats already fitted as i have 3 fobs for that.
will that work or will it throw a spanner cos the keys in the car?

A L/R breaker/garage near me (manchester) will do do a blank key and seperate fob which they can code if u alrdy have a workin fob so you can then have a spare.£75 , any locksmiths e.g Keyfax can copy your key. :)

Each key has its own unique electronic code (key 01,02,03,**,>)that is programed into the becm that the becm checks/reacts to when the ignition is turn on...
