Hi people new member here, not sure where to edit my details etc so I'll give them here....p38 DT owner 3years,in that time its been great, just a new clutch and water pump and slave cylinder, its beeen a great vehicle for me over the three years but last week when it was hot hot hot i was out for the day and the temp gauge went over half way, it usualy sits at about quarter, it suddenly seemed to lose power and when stopped at the lights the engine ticked over but wouldnt rev past tick over, when it cooled down it was ok and ran as normal, any ideas..?....thanks lads

My 4.0 sits on halfway, sometimes very slightly over the halfway marker, Wehn it was hot the other week it went to the next mark past the halway and ****ed out some coolant from the header overflow, initially thought, coolant pressurising, block is on its way but turned out the coolant cap wasnt tight, been fine since. Seems normal for the hot weather to make the car run hotter.

First check the viscous fan, with the engine hot and idling, shove a rolled up newspaper into the blades taking care not to put your hand in of course. If you can stop the fan then thats your problem. After that I'd look at the stat, and the water pump and then the rad. If you had aircon, I could give you a simple mod to use the electric fans for cooling.

Mine was running a bit warm this morning in the heat and in a traffic jam - aren't the air con fans supposed to come on automatically when the engine gets warmer than the viscous can cope with?

Certainly couldn't hear any electrical fans running, but I spose I wasn't really listening for them.

dont worry about it:hippie:winter will be here next week:biggrin1:errrrm i,ll get me coat

Next week? I thought it was due tomorrow?

Just done some reading up on this - sounds like running the aircon tends to make them run hot in traffic - just surprised the electric fans don't seem to be kicking in but perhaps it didn't get hot enough. I get paranoid if the temp guage moves even a fraction over halfway.

I'll listen out for them if it happens again. Are they noisy?

If it's a petrol yes they do, but only on low speed.

I have the same engine and am running without the viscous fan( in pursuit of max efficiency). There isn't any aircon so I rigged up a aircon single fan from a disco. I fitted a fan/temp switch i think 88deg, it only comes on with needle past second white strip. I am usually then pulling 3.5t water tank which I do regularly, on short journeys 2-3mls. With the hot weather I usually lower windows & put passenger side heat full on. Havn't had engine dying yet!:)
