Hi

I have a P38 4.0 auto and today the gearbox began playing up.

There was initially a slight grinding noise which sounded like it was coming from the passenger side, but then seemed to be coming from under the gear lever itself. It pulled away then power started dropping and the revs increased with no progress. I stopped and tried again and off it went, then the same thing happened, power dropped and revs increased as I kept my foot down. Sometimes it would pull away from a standing start, sometimes it wouldn't, but if it did, it would only be 50ft or so before it happened again.

I've checked the gearbox oil and thats fine, clean looking too.

Whats the best and worst case scenario here? I know these things are expensive to run but this couldn't have come at a worse time having been made redundant last week.

Thanks in advance.

Is this is D(drive) only or have you tried it in 1-2-3 as well?

Hi

I've tried that as well and it was the same, it would pull away for 20 or 30 yards and the same would happen. Switch it off and start again and its ok for another 30 yards, but there is always a grinding sound.

Hum, if it had always pulled away in 3rd then I'd say it was in limp home mode.....

Try R(reverse) if that is 'as normal' then the your 'A' clutch for forward drive has failed and it will need replacing.

I am surprised that there is nothing in the ATF. (shrug)

Hi Andy

Thanks for the reply. I'll mention this to the mechanic before he starts work.

Whats ATF though?

Whats ATF though?

ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid.
Due respect, but make sure your mechanic knows what he is upto if he is going to change a clutch.
