Hi,

I guess this may be the first of many posts about my range rover.

I went to drive it tis morning, turned it on, it stalled as it does if you dont use a lead foot. when I started it again there was a horrendous knocking from the engine. It also flashed up "alternator fault" but hasnt done since when Ive started it to see if its still there  (ever hopeful)

It runs fine at idle but as soon as any accelerator is used it knocks like a woodpecker

. then returns to normal once you let off. I think its the fan after peering at the engine for a while. Any ideas is it safe to drive to a garage? does anyone know anyone in Ramsgate who likes fixing these things? i am half tempted to drive it around to see if it sorts itself out.

Its a 2.5 td dse. 1995.

thanks any help much appreciated.

Have know this sort of thing if your belt has delaminated and has strand hanging loose. Have a good look at belt and cut off any strand hanging off it.

Hi drdig,

Doubt that it will sort its self out matey, the p38 isnt that sort of motor :)

I use a chap just outside Sturry called Land Rover Solutions, ex main dealer techie set up on his own, for anything thats not obvious.

I presume you have looked at all the obvious stuff like fan, water pump etc ie anything that gets turned by the belt to see if its wobbling when you increase the revs a bit?

Hi,
Thanks for all the help. It turns out the rubber has worn off the lower crankshaft pulley. The mechanic is hunting for a replacement as they are £400 odd squid new. Anyone got one for sale or know a good mail order scrappy? Only have v8 jobbies on ebay.

Depressed face.

the doozals have a habbit of disintergrating water pumps,,, make sure you get it checked,
if you can afford it change it anyway, much cheaper than a new head
