Hi Team,
As a newbie with P38 RR's, but as an electrical engineer (Nuclear, Oil&Gas, Pharma, MoD Comms etc..) of some 35 years experience, I m going to offer an unsolicited opinion:-

"The P38 electrical system is the product of an utterly deranged mind"

The people who go and thrash these things round quarries and stuff must remove most of this nonsense - question is, how?

Have we experts on here? What's the best strategy?

I have no wish to be twiddling keys left and right in the dark - I just want the thing to do what it's told and GO!

There have been mods to raise the BeCM and other underseat ECU's to the roof area using extension wiring and a false ceiling!!

The P38 and its associated devil-ness is integral - removal although possible would be a nightmare....better to have good, honest and thorough maintenance along with good off road technique and minor alterations!

there are two things you dont mess with mate mother fricken nature and p38 becms

Hmmmm - a Good Point, Well Made, however I now have the bit between my teeth.......

I've spent most of my life bending electrickery thangs to my will and I have no intent of allowing a mere P38A BECM to have any kind of unplanned control over my personal autonomy.

It's possible to remove the BECM and to replace it with old fashioned electro mechanical relay operation, it has been done. Pretty pointless though, the BECM is reliable as long as the footwell is not wet from O rings and other leaks. Most failures are due to corroded connectors, RF receivers and fuse boxes.
With diagnostics you can disable the immobiliser. With the diesel, you can also replace the EDC with a new one set to NON Robust mode then even loss of sync cannot happen.
