I think the 1st cam lobe being vertical is the starting point, as a guide to being at TDC at approximately 90 degrees further round.

Its then that the pin sits in place, until the adjustments are made.

I have to admit ive questioned myself a fair bit through this lol.

Yes, although I am not sure it is 90 degrees. It is the first hole and doesn't take long to get to. Been a while since I did mine though. There is a second hole not long after.

You have got the RAVE instructions?

The exhaust cam standing straight up indicates the piston is on the compression stroke. You CANNOT start trying to insert the timing pin at that stage. There is a timing pip 40 degrees before TDC you can get hooked on. There is also a timing pip 20 degrees after TDC that you can hook on. That is why i say when you have pin fully engaged the engine CANNOT be turned in either direction. That MUST be checked before timing pump.

Thanks for all of your input guys, its been a great help! Its been an eventful weekend with lots of swearing etc, but i can safely say that i have managed to get it running now!! The shaft of the pump was in the wrong position when it can back from being overhauled, so turning it through the best part of 270 degrees, to its position before 12 oclock has done the trick.

My woodruff key is very shallow in comparison to others ive seen, and like a numpty i thought i was in the right position. I've given myself a talking to, and now it starts on the button every time now!

The vehicle hasnt run for around 5 years or so, and on start up it sound a bit knocky.....so im hoping its just bad lubrication, and a good oil change will see it right? It was absolutely fine before i parked it....apart from the pump, so im hoping to give it a new lease of life!

Thanks again guys for your help! :)

Glad you got it up and running mate I am still putting mine back together hoping it will start ;)

Good luck with yours mate....the best bit of advice i can give is with regards to the position of the woodruff key!

I've got a few more bits left to assemble on mìne, but only really the fan and the inlet manifold so im certainly glad it starts!! :)
