could anyone tell at what speed the gearbox should change up (auto)?
reason for asking is when cold my dse stays in the gears longer and feels quite sprightly! but once it has done a few miles it changes up through the gears at lower points and you can feel torque converter lock up in third and fourth the problem is it changes up to 4th at just under 50mph and locks up the torque converter straight away afterwards which is fine going on the flat or going downhill but when it does it as iam accelerating uphill it drops the revs so the turbo is off boost and i have to wait till the speed drops to 45mph before it decides to change down very annoying if towing!
i may just add it does this even if iam accelerating fairly hard and it wont change down even if i push the throttle allmost to the floor but if i plant the throttle kick down works but i would expect it to change down one gear ie 3rd when i want it to!
also no faults stored in engine ecu or gearbox?

When i go up hills in my v8 i droop the box into 3rd, mainly to stop it wanting to change up to 4th. The other thing i do is put it in sport, which makes it change up at higher rev. I started doing this when I had my jeep before, and was towing trailers of concrete to tip

yep and i do the same but being a diesel not a v8 we are not talking big hills and when it is off boost it is as flat as a fart! very very annoying just want to know if other diesels are the same or is there a problem with mine as it wont change down to third when i put my foot down too the point of kick down

My DHSE is very sluggish on hills as well. Many people complain of this and some fit PSI chip boxes or the like to give better low rev torque.
I have recently had mine serviced and that made a huge difference but still not as powerful as I would like on hills. As part of the service I had the Auto Gearbox filter and tf changed which did improve the gear changing.
I am definitely considering a chip box but I am concerned about the insurance implications.

I think you'll find that the not changing up when cold is normal, mine does it and I've had many other autos that did it. I'm told it's to help speed up the engine warm up time.
I think the hill climbing issue is just something you've got to get used to really, just slip the box back into third keep the revs up and she'll fly up the hill....

thanks for the replys i guessed it was how it should be as my box changes smooth pulls from cold, mine has allready had the cat removed and silicone turbo pipes not the stupid price samco kit just measured and fit universal bends made big difference and boost is up at 19psi under full load. big intercooler next again will measure and fit a universal one biggest i can get in as they only cost around £100 compared to the price of a proper one
then it will be chipped or remap and hopefully i will be happy with it!
apart from the other faults on it, cant understand what it is about these trucks mine has cost me probably £3000 in the last year that i have owned it in parts alone but i still love it and have no intension of getting rid just dont tell the misses!
cheers for the replys!

Upping the boost is a really good way to bugger your engine up. :D:D:D

iam aware of the issues with cracking heads etc i put this engine in just after i bought it for that reason and the entire cooling system is new with genuine landrover parts i dont drive it like a loon it does limited mileage as a second car to be honest if it blows again will put another one in it as they arent an expensive engine.
i would rather have the extra performance and driving enjoyment as compared to when i first got it and it was like a snail!
i just think the gearbox shift points are wrong it could be a much nicer 4x4 to drive if they were slightly different but as this is not possible ( compushift is a bit to expensive)
then more power it will have to be!

Save up for a ZF4HP24 gearbox to accomodate the extra power:eek:

i must admit i have looked at ashcrofts site and that would be the ideal solution but at there prices again there must be a cheaper way for to do it ie buy the 24 gearbox and get it to fit at home i know they are longer so would need propshafts but get the larger torque convertor to fit has anyone done it?

Props are the same because the extension piece between the gearbox and transfer box is shorter on the 24. Also from what I have read the 4.6 has had initially a larger torque converter then reverted to the one fitted to the 4.0. Both are different to the one fitted to the diesel but I see no reason why the diesel one should not fit:D The bell housing from the diesel ought to fit the 24. It would be interesting to find out, I'd like to fit a 24 to mine:D:D

thats what i was thinking if you could fit the bell housing and torque converter from a diesel to the 24 gearbox only thing i can think of is oil pump and shaft that fits into the torque converter may be different
but as ashcroft fit the 24 internals into the 22 when they do an uprated one it must be possible?
but as mine has been off the road longer than it has been off it this year due to various faults it may have to wait till it breaks again!
