:eek: my p38 range rover is drinking fuel ie : £40.00 per 50mile has anyone got any ideas had a problem recently where it keeped revving at 2000rpm on tick over
 
o2 sensors are in the exhaust. old LR v8 had 2, yours might have 4, not sure. MAF is a big (expensive) box on the air intake somewhere after the air filter. bad o2 sensors are often a cause of poor fuel consumption, but not ususally that bad. You can test them, but you need to know a bit about electronics and have a mumtimeter at hand, along with specs for the sensors - you might be able to find this info somewhere on http://www.rangerovers.net

Not sure about testing the MAF, I've only ever cleaned them out.

if the exhaust is blowing slightly with this cause problems it's blowing on the ball joint just infront of the cat (hopefully will get it brazed or welded today if the weather breaks)
 
Can't see how a slight blow in the exhaust would make that much difference, if any.

Might be an idea to get it booked into a local LR specialist who can plug it into the diagnostics and see if they can trace a fault. Even if it costs you a couple of hundred to fix, you are going to get that back in fuel pretty quick at the rate you are using it!

have been through the rangey and cleaned the air flow sensor (mass sensor ) checked the o2 sensors in the exhaust x2 brazed the exhaust and once again i have it ticking over at 2000rpm

had normal tick over before i started:confused: :confused: :confused:
 
Someone reporting the same problem in this months LR International mag (intermittent problem with engine running at 2000rpm on V8 P38) They suggest that the problem is the stepper motor - if it is disconnected / not working properly, the engine will run up at 2000rpm. They say it may not show up as a fault, so it needs to be plugged into diagnostics equipment and run in dynamic mode, so they can see what each sensor is outputting to make sure the reading is correct. The article doesn't suggest a fix, so I can only assume that it needs replacing to get it sorted.

I would say stepper, as above...

I have faulty stepper in my ex-Classic(3,9) and symptom was high fuel consumption and high idle.(23litres/100km, +1000rpm idle)
When testing, it works nicely. After replacement, symptoms gone.
 
Just a shot in the dark here:

I was busy troubleshooting my cruise control by getting the pump to pull the actuator and the cruise contol wire to the fuel injection.

Next morning I fired the car up and it revved up to 2000 rpm.

Eventually found that the throttle cable (running parallel with the cruise contol cable) had become unseated and had not returned correctly to it's normal position. Fixed in 2 seconds.....

You should be getting warnings on the dash display if it was anything serious.
