I rebuilt my P38 after the engine blew up. I had help from a local truck mechanic, he took one look at the broken up water pump and recommended I look for a new engine. Which I did and we fitted it. Its done 100,0000 fewer than the old engine and runs really sweet, most of the time!

Just recently a problem has come to light, when the engine is hot its reluctant to pull away, the engine just doesn't seem to want to make power unless you rev it hard. Recently its also started to die as you pull up to a junction and you have to re-start the engine, it did it at a round about the other day leaving my stranded half way across the road trying to re-start it.

It runs perfectly OK when its cold, I did a 100 mile trick the other day, I set off very early and it was running sweet. On the return journey the temperature was 28 degrees outside and it messed about like crazy. Next morning again runs perfectly.

Two things I did an EGR delete and I'm not sure If I got the pipes the right way round to the manifold (this was done when I changed the engine and I forgot where they went)

Its not the MAF, I unplugged it and if anything it ran a little worse.

Check the delivery from the lift pump is as per spec in the Technical Section. If it is then I suspect your FIP is tired and on its way out. You need to stick it on diagnostics but I suspect when it dies the control collar is going out of range. You'll probably find the timing modulation is very high.

If it were a lift pump surely it would do it all the time, not just when its hot. Also it had nearly a full tank of fuel.

When I get it back from my wife the fuel light is always on (thats another fault i can't seem to fix) and its exactly the same - great when cold, messes about hot

Maybe this was why the car the engine came from got scraped!

I'm going to get the diagnostic box as its just useful to have with these vehicles.

Who would you suggest to do a good overhaul?

I still have the old pump from the engine we took out - should I fit that?

You can try it, better than spending £600.00.
