P38 diesel engine removal

Hi, due to old engine rattling like mad despite lots of new bits time to change engine then rebuild old one, so its the six cylinder bmw with auto box, is it easier to remove just the engine or engine and box, all replies welcome , cheers.

I just took the engine out. Nothing terribly complicated about it.

I would have thought just the engine, one hell of a big lump engine and box and a lot more stuff to undo and mess about with, so less bit to bugger up.

It's putting the new bits in, in the correct manner that is the trick.

Hi Wammers, after all the work it starts on the button every time is silky smooth whilst ticking over, only when you make it work does it rattle like hell, so exchange engine for a 2000 v8 seemed like a good deal as v8 is fubared, plus I got its wheels/tyres and decent leather interior.

Do i not recall it running like a bag of spanners when you first started it. Something wrong with timing or am i dreaming that?

yep nd no, reason for initial work was tappets ratteling, then got replacement set fitted them, then later fitted reconned injectors then it really started to rattle, then decided to strip and check everything, hence recon fip timing chains etc, now ticks over silky smooth, just throws wobbler when asked to work, so as above its coming out replacement going in then as time allows original is getting stripped for examination
