I have just bought a late 1995(N) P38 4.0SE with LPG (replacement engine 3000 miles ago by Maddison 4 x 4, Thrisk. It has started to cut out without warning accompanied by GEARBOX FAULT message. It then takes about 10 minutes/20 attempts to re-start. The previous owner had the gearbox checked about 5 months ago and it was given a clean bill of health. Is this a gearbox issue? Why does the engine cut out (VERY dangerous!) when this message appears?

Any information much appreciated.

Cheers, Kenny

I think your Gearbox Fault message is a consequence of the engine cutting out fault. The gearbox ecu will detect an under torque reading and call Gearbox Fault error.
Get the engine cutting out fault fixed and the Gearbox Fault message should disappear (hopefully)

I experienced a simular thing a few times, when starting the engine from cold, say first thing in the morning, then selecting Drive a bit quick the ecu detected the Under Torque reading....the engine had just fired. I'm sure my box could do with an oil and filter change as well which might help.
I can't help with the cutting out failure I'm afraid, you'll need to get it diagnosed at a garage with the right kit. A good independant should have the diagnostic computer.

Hi, i had the same gearbox fault message when my engine cut out. It always used to happen when i was going down a steep hill in drive and the engine would over run, go from third to fourth gear and stall the engine. very frightening!! had the gear box checked and the gear box oil level was too high, so we took some oil out and touch wood it hasn't done it again! although the garage told me i shouldn't be going down steep hills in drive anyway, i should hold it back in 3 or 2 so the engine breaking is in use. yours sound as if it more to do with the engine though if you find it hard to restart, mine restarted first time so wasn't the engine.

Thanks to LIRA and Ladyranger for the information. An auto electrician has confirmed what you are saying - unfortunately he did not have the Land Rover diagnostic equipment available. I'll post another question re. the cause of the engine cutting out which is VERY frightening - without warning the engine cuts out leaving no power steering etc - not ideal if you are in the outside lane of a motorway or overtaking another vehicle!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again for your help.
