P38 clutch problems

Hello,
I did try to post my own thread on but not sure how to yet so i have replied to this one, i hope its okay.

I was hoping someone on here might understand a problem i am having (again).
I have a range rover p38 mileage 111187 and its a 99 T reg manual 2.5'D, the clutch was slipping just a bit but only
some times till one day it just went all together, anyway i went under it and notice that the clutch slave cylinder push rod had
come out. When i got the gear box of the clutch disc was okay but what i did notice was that the diaphragm spring was bent in on one side and
the pins that go through the fork and fork shaft was snapped so i bought clutch kit pins and clutch slave cylinder put it all back together
just before xmas and its started doing the same thing again, when accelerating it revs up a bit as if the clutch is going, i haven't taken it to bits just yet but i will be. (I did bleed the clutch)

Did you replace the release bearing and pressure plate and do you know what make they were? You want Valeo or talk to clutch-fix (https://www.clutch-fix.co.uk/) and they'll do you a high temperature one for the same price as the Valeo one. Think it is Ben you want to talk to.

When you are in there you need to check the dual mass flywheel. It is sort of in 2 halves, a front half and a back half that has long springs inside to take up vibration and make a smooth gear change. If the front half moves more than a tooth round before it gets hard to push round (i.e. you're fighting the internal springs) then it probably needs replacing. I'd advise against converting to solid flywheel. If you need the DMF then get an original LUK one from Eurocarparts but don't go straight online. Ring their office in London first asking for the part number (=336670010) and they should give you a discount code.

Hi,
yes, i bought the full kit and it had the release bearing with it, the make of the clutch is Valeo.
there is some clunking noise when changing gear but not all the time, this DMF, can it make sound like the clutch is slipping
, i will have a look at DMF and check the movement. can anything within the gearbox do this as i have been told tha
the manual gearboxes are not that good. i will have a look before i phone Eurocarparts.

Sorry I forgot to ask, why would you advise against converting to solid flywheel ?, the car is only use by my wife along with taking the kids out.
it will never pull anything.

Never heard any issues from the R380 in the P38 other than the spriral clutch pins (hope you double-pin them or wedge something up the inside like a pop-rivet shaft) and the selector box on top can be a bit of a pain.

On the DMF those long springs take all sorts of vibration out from the drivetrain that the little springs on a standard friction plate just won't do. Without it it could stuff your gearbox. The gurus on here like jamesmartin advise against it and so did an old mechanic friend of mine who knows more about motors than most people ever will. Mine was slipping at max-torque in 3rd until I replaced the DMF.

There was some play in the DMF but i thought it was okay to have a bit of play.
I did double-pin the clutch fork.

Can this DMF be reconditioned ?

Yes, bit of play but not too much.

Don't know to be honest. I would imagine it has to be finely balanced but someone might be able to do it. Maybe Clutch-fix or Rakeway Motorsport could do it?

Only things I can think of causing clutch to slip are: contaminated friction plate; cooked friction plate; pressure plate springs weak; DMF worn out.; clutch fork itself was bent that might cause issues; slave piston was the wrong length. That's most of the things that have turned up on this forum.

Hi, The clutch as gone now but its not just the clutch its also the brakes lose pressure but there is know leak any where at all
I just cant understand how the clutch can just go in 9 months, its never pulled anything at all, its had a full valeo clutch kit and 2 new pins in the clutch fork.

I'm going to buy a gearbox lift and have a look.

Hi,
Maybe it is the ABS accumulator that is knackered but this is easy to sort, it just the problem with this clutch.
I thinking of drilling out a pilot hole just where the bell housing is then I can see what's going on.

When the DMF goes can it make the clutch pedal just go to the floor.

the fluid is full to the line (Max Level)

No, it is like a single mass flywheel but in 2 parts. It is the same distance from the clutch. I guess if it broke off the end of the crankshaft and fell down the clutch might go to the floor but I've never heard of that.

The ABS should (!) have nothing to do with it. The clutch fluid comes off the side of the brake reservoir and that's it. It just uses the reservoir for fluid. It might help using a Gunson Easibleed kit to blast all air out of the system through the slave cylinder - just pump a good litre through to be sure. I did have issues last time my clutch was out and using the Easibleed kit cured it even though I saw no air come out! If that doesn't do it then I'm back to my earlier post for suggestions. @wammers and @jamesmartin are the experts so I'd listen to whatever they say.
