Rumble on the pedal when braking hard is the ABS working. It is designed to unload the wheel that is slowing or about to lose grip. Originally develpoed in a mechanical form know as dunlop Maxeret to stop tail wheeled aircraft from spinning off aircraft carrier decks if one wheel locked up back in the 30s Electronic version brought in by Bosch in the 80s. First road car to have ABS, the mechanical version, was the Jensen interceptor in the 70s.
