Hi,firstly how many gears has the 1996 diesel auto box got and secondly how many gears has the 2000 v8 autobox got and finally are they interchangeable, reason I have a diesel on the road and a scrap(boiled engine) v8.ta.

Four. Oh yes and reverse before some smart arse pulls me up. With a bit of work yes.

Does the "bit of work" depend on the size of the v8 engine or year or both?

Depends, you certainly need to change the bell housing and torque converter and maybe the oil pump. Depends which box you have. 4.0 is same as diesel HP 22, 4.6 is a HP24.
