Yes the P38 has gone out of the "10 a penny stage" and the Vogue's and DHSE's are fetching good money..
As well as the well spec'd HSE's they aren't gonna be cheap for long..
Times have passed since you could get a solid one for 1k.
And that is pretty reasonable I've seen a few changing hands for over 5k.

MPG depends the V8 according some sources can get anyware between 15-22 depending on how you drive, and of course Petrol is cheaper than Diesel
The diesel is quiet when cruising and flies if remapped.

Today is my first birthdsg with my P38, 99 4.6 HSE.
In that year I have had fixed heater o rings, coolant leak transmission leak and bottom ball joints but having done that it passed mot with no advisories.
I have done 3k miles in it over the year mostly weekend running.
It still has its wee foibles, sagging roof lining the rear, lcd display can be temperamental and not display properly, passenger side heated seat doesn't work and I need to get the air con re-gassed/checked.
I didn't get it to become a concourse vehicle, I wanted a cheap tow vehicle for towing a trailer and logs and weekend use which ig does very well.
But and it is a big but, it makes me smile evety time I am behind the wheel.

I’m afraid the thought of having a V8 is just too tempting. If I wanted diesel I would probably just get a disco I reckon.

Even the inevitable cost of fixing the P38 brings it under what a doggy-Defender goes for. Buy the P38 and off-road in comfort. You might want to invest in Air-lockers if you have some spare cash. And keep an eye out on the Bay for a Tirfor winch and land-anchor, together with tree huggers.

Aye what the above say, even a complete shítpile of a p38 will probably cost less than a bad defender to put right IMO.
And TBH I hate the crowd that come over and say oh ya Range Rover is crap because it is expensive to fix and run! pah.
And they usually trundle back off to their defender section talking about a new £3000 chassis coz theirs snapped in half

The newer Defenders have plenty of problems with clutches and EGR valves among other things.Aye what the above say, even a complete shítpile of a p38 will probably cost less than a bad defender to put right IMO.

I have just bought another P38 4.6, you just cant beat the V8...
