Hi All,

One sunny weekend and a lingering problem of failing aircon finally gave out after 3 yrs of getting worse and worse.

I know what the problem is, a new condenser and dryer needed but have been quoted a massive price by my very reputable and helpful local garage (they do all other work without fault and to a great standard), best price to fix this lot nearly £1K!!!!

Any ideas on how to get parts for less so I can get fixed?

Cheers.

Probably don't need the dryer, just the condensor. A new condensor can be found on Ebay or from suppliers like Rimmer Bros for £80 or and it's an easy DIY job to fit. Then it's just a vacuum out of the old gas and oil, a leak check and a re-gas, cost about £60 at Halfrauds or many other places.

A grand for what is probably an hours work and less than £100 for parts don't seem like good value to me!

As Data quite rightly says that price is beyond belief. Unless the new condensor is made from solid silver and they are fitting a new aircon compressor electric fans and a ice lolly maker.

Mine seems to work when it's cool outside but at the first whiff of warmth I get the little book symbol and it drops dead on the spot. Given the cost of my car, which was bought as a weekend warrior, a grand would be a bit hard to swallow. Luckily the electric windows work as a suitable alternative. I might push it and buy one of those little clip-on 12v fans if it gets very hot this summer. Chance would be a fine thing.
