They are not VIN coded. If a second hand ECU has been triggered it's useless. Take your ECU out and look for one with the same number. As far as I'm aware, after 1999, all the SRS ECU's are much the same with side airbags. Replacement is plug and play unless any faults come up. Battery must be disconnected to work on the SRS.
If you don't wish to replace the fired airbag, a resistor can be fitted to fool the ECU into thinking the airbag is there.

Thanks as always for the advice @Datatek. I was hoping to avoid having to do the job twice or have the car out of action whilst tracking down a replacement ecu. I was sort of hoping there would be some logic to which ecu was in each vehicle
