P38 2001 2.5 DHSE Engine Revving higher than expected speed of vehicle slow.

Hi, Have a problem.

I swapped one of my old S Type jags for a lovely looking P38 2001. Engine was diabled and had been for standing for six months. Got it home, fixed the drivers door lock and micro switches. Programmed new keyfob, cleared all warnings, WIndows etc. Coolant leak on u bend at rear of head.
Engine and vehicle really nice.

Problem is this.......It revs high in all gears and slows down on inclines as if slipping. Cleaned and checked filter, drained one load of ATF off. Refilled with correct procedure and slightly better but drive is not good.

My mate assures me it was fine when he parked it up. Oil was really dark brown but no great deposits of sludge or metals in sump.

Can standing cause the Gearbox Ecu's to play up or is there some possible grounding problems. I read somewhere that head temps sensors can cause all sorts of problems, is this correct in the cae of the drive.

Hope the box is not jiggered......only 102k miles and vehicle is in great looked after shape.

No.....not plugged in to get any gearbox codes as yet. obd is all clear using my icarsoft but it does not access gearbox unfortunately.

Any suggestions..........(Dont tell me new Box) not yet.......wrong time for that cost LOL).

Best wishes.

Few of the P38 boys have s types to run round in.

Does it do it in neutral? You seem to think it’s gearbox related? There is filter in auto box also. Could be TC
Could be sensor MAF is usual suspect.

Check link above ^^^ and make new thread, they will know and sort you out. If GBox is okay it should be cheapish easy fix.

Welcome aboard:)
you will get more help if you post in the Range rover section, the valves could be a bit sticky in the box a shot of lucas transmisionfix is the standard stuff to try,
you will not find better help for p38`s then on here

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the advice. I need to get to know where the various sections are and how to operate the forum site a bit better for sure.

I will try the lucas transmission fix definitely as it has been standing. (There was no bad guuuuunge when I dropped the first oil out and as I said no massive bits in the pan or filter.

Thank you once again for taking the time to tap your fingers.

Regards.

I've recently collected a few cars just because they were cheap tbh. Found a mad collector and just bought em all off him .....2x xj' two s types and two x types plus a xj8.

Having purchased a couple of l322's One 05 and one 02(Con rod snapped on the 02). My interest fell more into the Range Rovers. To be frank......every mechanic friend I speak to slates the P38's like hell.....but this is such a tight vehicle I think it could with little work become a concourse keep away. (Just the 102k perhaps let's it down).

Will check the link and try to re-post. Thanks.

P.S. So a Mass air flow sensor would give the feeling of gearbox slipping would it in some way. Agree the TC might be at fault. Was actually wondering if it's time to take the box out, strip the block and replace the cups/balls etc and the drive rings. I don't really fancy installing another second hand box and having the same problem recurring.

Regards.

Oopss No it does not do it in nuetral.....no hunting of the revs in any gear position.

You and Grrrrrr will get along like a house on fire.
102,000 miles is nothing for P38, 140/150 you will need few little bits maybe.

MAF was a thought for engine revving irregularly and going slow - your problem sounds like you think GB, and you seem to know enough to take it apart so il guess you are right.

Make a thread here (same as you did in this intro forum) -

They will deduce exactly ;)

Grrrrr........Sorry you lost me on Grrrrr.........Went right over my head. LOL.

Taking it aparts not a problem.........(Putting it all back together might be a laugh......That would cause plenty of Grrrrrr. LOL.

THanks for the reply.

Many regards.

P.S. I thought I copied it to your link, I'll check that. Oh and Yes, appreciate if anyone can help deduce........it beats just spending and not getting to the problem.
