P38 2.5 Rev related whining

Hi,

Since buying my 2.5 P38 I have had a whining noise that is directly related to the revs.

The whining is a present even when stationary, and having my better half rev the engine whilst look, I think its possibly the alternator, but I'm not 100%.

Before I go to the effort of bench testing the alternator, is there anything else that could cause the whining noise?

Power steering pump, viscous radiator cooling fans seize up sounding very noisy when revving.........we cleaned ours and used WD40 or buy new
Air con pump if fitted, take belt off and see

Take a long reach screw driver or something similar. Place one end/near on the suspect item, run vehicle and place other end gently in your ear (the handle of a screw driver just rests inside the lobe). You'll hear if it is that item that is faulty.

Whining is a bearing. Check as Bix says or use a stethoscope.
