Hi, new to the forum and I hope I am posting in the right place.
It is a range rover related issue, I have a range rover p38 engine 2.5 diesel ( BMW M51) fitted recently in my boat and to get get rid of all the ECU and the wires I managed to get a mechanical pump out of old BMW M21, modified it and I fitted it today, also changed injector number 4 with a standard injection.
I tried to start the engine up it turns alright, diesel getting to injector but not as much pressure doesn't matter how much I am turning the engine it just wouldn't start.

The guy that was helping me today he is a p38 owner and he believes it could be that the pressure pump that prime diesel to the injection pump not very strong with low flow rate as the one I use it says 125 LPH could that be the issue? Do I need more flow pump to feed a lot of diesel to the mechanical injection pump?

Thanks in advance

Welcome:)

I would say WOW is this not another boat Fred in disguise :).(sorry you won’t know the forum joke)

but I won’t, arhhhh I just did

Anyway sorry I know nothing about the engine but help will be on it’s way soon, I know a few members were talking about the mechanically pump so help is around.

good luck:)

Glow plugs tested and they are fine, what I am worried from the amount of diesel that get to the injector are they suppose to be very strong pressure to push down inside the injectors, sorry I am novice with that.

Should run even if the lift pump is not good, they will run in the P38 with a dead lift pump if the tank is half full or more.
I'd be inclined to give it a dose of easy start and see if it fires.
I can't think of an engine I'd be less inclined to have in a boat, what have you done about cooling? Are you using a heat exchanger or direct cooling. If direct and anywhere near salt water, don't expect the engine to last long.
