Hi Guys,

My old man has a 1995 P38 diesel and admittedly it has quite high mileage (190K)

The vehicle has no torque to speak of, if you try and drive up a reasonably steep hill from a standing start, it just stalls.

You have to get the revs so high to prevent the stall that the clutch starts to smell and smoke quite badly.

Is this to be expected for that kind of mileage, or does this point to particular issue?

Sounds like your not getting any turbo. Check the MAP sensor tube is connected and sound. Tube from under manifold to small sensor bolted to fuel filter. Check electrical connections to this. Check turbo pipes for internal collapse. Pipe from intercooler to manifold should inflate as engine is revved. Intercooler may need cleaning out. Try this and see what you get.

I am positive the turbo is fine as on the open road it pulls and accelerates really well.

It is just when you have a slope or similar that it cant manage, and only really from a standing start

Manual, they don't have a lot of power below 2000/2500rpm, auto handles it better with the torque converter. I would start off by getting the fault codes read.
