Hi, depends on how much you want to spend and if you can handle the equipment.
A few years ago all you got was a map and a compass, todays travellers tend to fill the vehicle with loads of electronic features which they can`t use.

My opinion is to buy a used Garmin GPS, for example a Streetpilot or my favorite a 276C
a Software to plan your route on the computer and then some old style Maps and a good Compass for safety.
And last but not least a Logbook and a pen.

I know, it sounds a bit outdated but you drive a Defender, right?

Yup, a Defender it is. We're doing the trip through Africa with a couple of mates also in a Defender and they have a Garmin, just trying to work out if we could get away with one GPS between the 2 vehicles. So far got all the Michellin maps for Africa and a couple of general Africa ones.

How much is a used GPS these days? I got my 276c for around 150 Euro a year ago.

BTW Welcome and as minty told you, loads of Infos available
