OK, short history first....

Over the winter I used the Disco to work (around 12 miles) after about 1/2 way I would have expected to get some heat from the heater, but nothing, even though the guage reading was around 1/3. After stopping at junctions for a short while, the guage would creep up to just below the red then after playing around with the controls I would suddenly get heat and the guage would drop. Did this around 4-5 times.

Been fine so far this year, but the other day, I was cruising at around 60mph on a dual track when I noticed a loss off power and the guage went quickly up to the red. I pulled over, waited a few minutes, and carried on very slowly for a the couple of miles I had left to go. When I stopped, I let the engine cool down for around 20mins, then topped up the bottle which took around 1 1/2 litres!

I then drove home another 10 miles or so and it seemed fine, temp around 1/3 and power seemed OK.

When the engine first overheated, I instantly put all heater controls to MAX to try and help cool the engine, but there was cold air coming out??

After I had stopped, and topped up again, as soon as I started off, the heater was working fine.

I would really appreciate any help/ideas on this one.
