Evening all

Had a new front diff pan welded on yesterday and took her out for a spin. But have encountered a new set off probs...

On way home whilst driving into a very strong headwind (car doing about about 50 mph) smelt burning under the dash (near temp controls) then the engine temp shot up very quickly:confused:, pulled over into layby and 5 mins later temp was back down couldn't find anything. 10 miles or so onward, again driving into a really strong headwind this time doing 30mph, once again engine temp shot up really quickly but dropped as soon as we pulled over.

The handbrake lever is also very hot to touch during driving (it is released during driving)??

Any suggestions as to what the probs could be for me to get checked tomorrow (when it stops pi$$ing it down) would be greatly appreciated, as having sold our other car the Mrs is now giving me some serious cr@p about selling the Disco:( as it seems to have developed a lot gremlins lately

check your earth cables.

It sounds like you have one snapped or corroded causing the electricity to use the handbrake cable as an earth.

FFS I had the disco (doing diff pan) in garage yesterday told em to check the earth near the handbrake as it was suggested on here that a dodgy earth was causing the headlight to lose power!! "everything was fine, it's a duff battery you've got" is what they said despite the battery having been checked!!

they're f@@ked if I'm paying my bill on Monday now , damn I need a drink:mad:

by the way thanks for your help Ratty;)

no probs

Are they just a normal garage or a landrover independant? if they are an independant I would say to get shot of em and name and shame em on here.

No just a normal garage, but they get a lot of LR custom due to this being farming country, I did take my last Disco to an Independant but as he was quite expensive I switched to this one with a bonus it's only a mile from our home, starting to regret it now though.

handbrake cables acting as earths are really common on disco's. They should know that if they deal with loads of em.:(

Indeed, even the AA guy who gave the Disco a jump start a few days ago suggested the same prob. Would a bad earth drain the battery overnight? happened 5 nights on the trot now, battery been tested and is ok

It aint a flat battery. If it happens again, get a jump lead and connect it from the earth terminal to the engine or gearbox. Your disco will then start. Everytime you have been jump started you have used the jump vehicle as your earth.

If the battery was tested BEFORE any attempt to start it was made it should have shown as being ok.

If it shows as flat then I would say that the garage who did you welding did the welding with the battery connected and burnt the alternator out. The blocking diode is allowing the current to flow oput of the battery through the alternator overnight.

Good tip Ratty, probably common sense to most, but most car's we've owned have been very reliable only needing the usual servicing so these probs are all new to me....the pains and joys of owing a LR:eek:.

whenever I go out to a vehicle with the symptoms of flat bettery I always put a multimeter on the battery BEFORE I attempt to jump it. It shows up faults like yours then. If the AA guy had done it when he started you it mighta stopped all this messing about.

When the AA came according the my wife he tested the battery after jumping the car not before, battery putting out 14v+ today with engine running according to garage, but it's on my to do list tomorrow to do a proper check once I get a meter off my brother.

Sorry for my ignorance Ratty, your help & advice is greatly appreciated though...and it'll help when I call that garage to give them grief.

No probs. We are ALL still learning.;) I hope you get it sorted.:)

I just spotted your post in the what have you done to your landy thread. I think ALL the problems stem from your earth. Your temp wouldn't rise and fall that quick.

Lucky I popped back on forum b4 heading off to catch some zzzzzz's, I'll sleep easier now after reading this as I was having palpitation's thinking the overheating might be a blown head gasket. Well once the earth is traced and sorted, and I've checked rad and HG, I'll let you know

Your a star Ratty;)

After Saturday nights fun and games it's been a busy & wet:mad: (3 day's solid of rain and a wet passenger footwell:( ) day, checked most of the electrickery I could find (non fried or corroded), found a blown fuse (aux. under dash), and tracked down the dodgy earth to battery earth (so peeved at missing that one). Result...no earthing handbrake cable, overheating engine or dim headlights.......best result, the wife is finally easing up on the grief:D
