I'm possibly worrying, but just wanted to sound advice. I have a N plate disco 1, stock 300tdi auto. Just got it, and after some careful prodding about I took it for a couple fo short runs, and then a longer run up the M62 from Leeds.
So climbing up the long hall to Rishworth, the temp gauge is showing a little more than normal - ie it's almost perfectly horizontal, rather than being dipped down a little bit from usual. Nothing odd I thought. I'm cruising up at about 55mph, with the box in top and the torque converter locked up, all well.
Getting near to the top in the wind shadow of an artic the temp needle started a fast rise up and just hit the bottom of the red section as I came off the slip and then coasted down to the exit road where I parked and let her idle. The fan coupling had locked up and was blowing like a gale - after a minute idling it was back to the middle. When I saw the gauge rising I eased off the power and gently drove it - perhaps a minute or so of "hot" running.
Got to the garage and jetwashed the mud out the radiator, the intercooler, the autobox cooler etc - all completely caked with mud from offroading that the previous owner had left. I reckon only about 1/4 of the main rad and intercooler was free - the autobox radiator was totally clogged.
So the question is - how likely is this to have caused damage if any? I know the TDI is meant to be a bit sensitive to overheating, but not sure how much abuse it's likely to take. There doesnt appear to be any leaks, there is no more overheating, not water in the oil or vice versa etc...
