Hi all, It's times like this I wish I knew more about car mechanics!! Drivin home tonight and after about 15 mins the overheating light started flashing and the quage was almost at max. I slowed abit and it went off and guage went down, I got home about 10 mins later and it never came on again! Is this a sign of things to come, hate when stuff like that happens. I don't know if it's related but I'm havin problems started her in the mornings, turn the key, nothin happens for a while then it kicks in after a few clicks comin from the engine, might be the starter but I don't have a decent garage that want's the hassle - Help please...

You'll find us a rough arse bunch, but helpful.
So you have a 200 series tdi diesel discovery?
It's sounding like head gasket failure.

Cheers mate..
I've been reading a few posts and replies about the clicking I've been getting when trying to start her in the morning, would u agree theres a battery problem too?? Could the heating issue also be steming from a faulty battery? Bloody killer is I've just go her out of garage and spent a few quid changing discs and pads and getting her through m.o.t!!! Then Mrs wrote car off so we really need it, is it ok to drive the Disco-if it starts that is?

Hope so but how do i find out?? As i said the mechanics round here seem a bit dim when it comes to the finer workings of the Land Rover - they just want the easy stuff!! Theres one guy in Saintfield area but he's a mths waiting list to get him, I can understand why.

Have you checked your coolant level ?If its original rad its probably had it. I had similar problem , it was fine around town but at motorway speed temp shot up.When I slowed it came back down.New rads are about £100 over here.

Tonight was the first it's happened, hopefully when Mrs is driving to work this week it won't bloody act up. I'm only the second owner, the guy before me had it serviced every 6k by local land rover dealer, it's been well looked after so I want to keep it that way. I'd say it'll cost another £100 to get it fitted, plus I think I need a new battery.

Fit it yourself mate. Its dead easy.If I can do it so can you. Just do a search if you need help or get Haynes manual. If youve got an old Landy you have to learn a bit or you will always have your hand in yer pocket :D If it is h/g faliure your in trouble, thats not cheap.usualy about £500:eek:

I agree, I really need to learn more about the old girl. I'm pretty handy at D.I.y but just never got into mechanics. I've a GSF600 aswell and never even done any servicing on that- bloody disgrace really givin all that money to a mechanic, given that all the info i need is probably on here somewhere.
Do u think that if it heats up but then cools down again it isn't the h/g - how can i figure it out without screwing up the pistons at some stage?

Thought sayin Bandit was just opening myself up too a load of questions like - "whats that" lol!!!
Should i just get a new battery for Disco, anywhere in particular I could get a good deal on one that u know of?

there's some missleading info being given ere methinks

firstly someone thinks that a vehicle that gets hot is suffering from HG failure - shirly the first thing to ask is about the coolant level and the state of the rad before you start going worrying peeps

fair play to danny for pointing that out eventually but how do you get to 500 squid for a 30 gasket and a 40 squid skim ?

make sure there's coolant in it - then take it out and get it nice and warm (not hot) - as soon as you see the gauge going above normal stop turn the engine off and feel the temp of the bottom and top rad hoses - my guess is that they will feel the same indicating that the rad is fecked

check to see if the rad is externally full of mud n crap n crip packets - wash it off and do the above again

you might find that most of the fins have corroded off

you also might get some joy by flushing out the rad - but DON'T just assume it's the HG

Cheers Sean for all the advice, sounds like u've had plenty of guff in the past from ur yoke! Hopefully it's just the rad and hopefully ur right about the HG too and the price.
So u any advice on the issue of the intermitant click click click noises when trying to start it, would this be the battery or starter issue. Worst of it is it only happens when u bloody really don't need it too!!

i wish i knew what "guff from your yoke" means :)

click click is usually battery, bad earth or the main + feed to the starter being loose - i'd bet on it being a bad earth - you could spend all day trying to find it, i'd just run a new HD cable from the neg terminal on the battery to as close to the starter as possible

"guff from your yoke" - Crap from vehicle, just some local lingo there for ya!!!
I'll have to get someone with a lot more knowledge about these things to sort it out for me - i'd only set the thing on fire since I couldn't tell ya where the starter is on it. I'll also see what happens with the rad as u suggested. Just a bloody pain since the Mrs wrote off her car and she needs it for work.

It sounds crazy but thats what garages round here seem to charge . I was quoted £600 by an independent Land Rover garage in Macclesfield
