Overheating Disco 300TDi

hi i had the same problem on my disco, it turned out to be a faulty impellor on my water pump. if i were you i would look in that direction first.
 
A faulty impellor gave you over-heating under load and then spitting all the water out even if the temperature was normal? Well, I'll have a look before I take the head orf.
 
I've got the water pump off and the impeller looks good, but it's a little on the stiff side (insert double entendre here) and squeaks when turned. How freely should it turn?
 
Nowt wrong with Paddocks!Ive had loads of stuff off em and no problems,and so have many others on here so dont believe all you hear. ;)

re-read post 20 of this thread - it's a comment that most people will agree with

if your want to fit cheap components that have a very limited life when compared to an orginal or OEM part, that's your choice
 
I remember a quote along the lines of...

"The sweet taste of a bargain doesn't last long, the sour taste of poor quality/service/support sticks around for a lot longer".

Cheapest never (or nearly never) means best value.

Oh, by the way, got the new (Landy) water pump fitted. Did a very short gentle run this evening and okay so far. Will do a proper test in the morning.
 
Proper test and same old same old.

Nickh75 suggested it might be the small hose that links the stat housing to the header tank. So I took the pipe off and there was sludge there. Cleared it out, did a little dance and took it out for a spin. All seemed better so I took it up the steepest hill in the area and the problem came back with a vengeance! Limped home, took the head off and as well as the gasket being blown and the head being a bit warped a couple of the waterways are bunged up with the same gloop.

So the head's off and ready to be skimmed and I'll be trying to scoop the crap out of the waterways.

Hopefully I'll be asking who's coming out to get muddy next weekend...
 
It was the head gasket, although it is worth checking all of the coolant hoses before doing it - especially the micro breather pipes that go from the header tank to the rad and stat housing before taking the head off. There's a Y piece that join the little hoses together which was blocked on mine and I think that might have been what caused the problem in the first place.
 
Well well, I have the same problem on my '98 300, I have had very similar advice as you have had, only just getting round to checking all the things I was advised to check. Good luck and keep us posted.

Ironic - if i'd of been around when ya posted, i'd of said check that 1st !
I've had my recent Disco suffer the same fate a few days ago - blocked purge pipe from the hsg to the valve, and a few others in the past from a totally clogged up valve, or plugged nipple on the tank.

Glad ya got it all sorted !
