Morning

I have a v reg P38 2.5td 160000

Had an issue with over heating which we traced back to water pump which we replaced along with thermostat. All good since until yesterday.

return journey to leicester from Reading with a trailer no issues all day but whilst on M4 suddenly over heated red light on then temp gauge dropped out completely. On stopping and popping bonnet the the top of the radiator that the reutrn to the expantion tank is had cracked most of the way along and sprayed coolant over everywhere.

Towed of motorway and on trying to re start the engine it wont now just makes a whining wirring noise.

Any advice or ideas welcome.

Many thanks

Andy

Can you suggest my next move how easy is a head gasket to do on the P38 and is it worth trying one of these pour in solutions?

Easy if you know what you are doing, not easy if you don't. Get it recovered and get someone who knows what they are doing to look at it.

If you can follow instructions and have a reasonable toolkit it's doable. It probably comes down to confidence in yourself and being sensible as much as anything. You will need some specific tools for the timing chain and tensioners - I think I paid about £60 for them from memory.

He needs to take the car to someone who can tell him what is wrong with it. Speculation is not going to do it for him.
