over heating.....help

bought the 2.5 dse p38 mid sept with 120k on clock. three weeks later had to top the water coolent up as temp gauge rose and red light came on....now tonight its happened again.topped up and now fine...when bought the car the guy had a water bottle in boot but when asked was it for over heating he said no(think i was lied to)...............any ideas what cud be causing this problem?????going to frnace in it 3rd december so need to get it sorted.cheers.

dodgy thermostat as a guess. worth checking out.

forgot to add the temp gauge sometimes went down when going round corners....dnt no if that means anything more

that would be lack of coolant

land rover specialist seems to think head gasket....bloody another £600 if that case....if new head £1200 on its own.

had a look and theres no sign of leaks from anywhere....said there was evidience or a anti freeze/coolant mix in the air vent hole down my the drivers left leg.said if no signs of leak its going out throu exhaust and that a head gasket job.

i had a similar problem did everything, thermostat, heads, flush. turned out to be the rad, £120 sorted and runs slightly cool now too, lol, thats where i would start and it will be good for ages.
