Hi

I have just completed a 150 mile trip in my 2000 Reg 2.5 Auto P38 and the Temp only just went over the blue line and stayed there the whole time? So I presume this is over cooling? Could this be as simple as a thermostat sticking open? or does anyone suspect something more sinister? I was chugging along at 70 to 75 mph not towing, and only 2 of us in car. I averaged 31mpg (or so the computer says) I'll do the actual maths later and report back.

Any suggestions welcome
 
Never heard of over cooling , just not getting hot/ warm does your gauge normally sit at 12 o clock/ half way ? Could be your t/ stat is there enough water in the system,insufficient can caus incorrect temp sensor readings .

Yes, water levels sitting at Max I think I'll dive in this weekend and change the stat and see if things improve.

I've only owned the vehicle for 4 weeks and never really been on a long run, the temp gauge has come up to 12 o'clock (as many on here have said it should) but only on very hot days and in slow moving traffic.
 
Id go with the sensor personally as if its running right and only on really hot days in traffic it goes up id say sensors buggered.

We have two in our family an auto and a manuel 1999/1997 the auto has had a complete water system sits halfway and the manuel unknown sit just over 1/4 so you will get varied readings as long as the the gauge moves up in the morning you know the gauge is working. It has been known that some have taken the t/ stat out due to over heating probs could be that but I would of thought after a long period the temp would rise a bit higher than yours sits.
 
faulty thermostat, only other poss is viscous fan locked solid but you would hear it roaring.
temp on a dse should sit at around 11oclock and increase to around 12 when being worked, if it is sitting down by the blue bit replace thermostat.

I have a stat and seal sat on my desk at work, I'll get spanner swinging this weekend, and I think while I'm getting my hands dirty anyway I will remove the viscous fan and wire up the air con fans for cooling :)

Check the replacement stat in a pan of boiling water, there are a lot of duff one's about.
